Public Affairs

Communicate Ideas Creatively and Effectively

Overview

As a Public Affairs Officer in the Navy Reserve, your task is to determine the best media to deliver news and information, and provide intuitive advice to top-level decision makers.

Description

Write a press release one minute. Appear on camera before the press the next. Or direct the development of a training video for an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team. Perhaps even help arrange a presidential visit to the Norfolk Naval Base, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet the President. Whatever your task, the goal is to improvise and strategize.

To become a Public Affairs Officer, you must have a degree from an accredited four-year U.S. college or university. However, for those with a High School Diploma or equivalent, you may qualify for a similar career in Arts and Photography.

Specifics

Whether you’re coordinating a live webcast or helping a Commander prepare an important speech, you’ll be asked to tap your own creativity, communication abilities and people skills. They will take you far. The opportunity to document exciting news is the reality in the Navy Reserve, offering you a wide range of real-world experience and an unmatched portfolio.

Large corporations, government agencies, and colleges and universities worldwide value the experience and skills you’ll develop in this role. With the media exposure, management skills and public relations experience, you’ll have the requisite skill set that allows you to dive into virtually any civilian media or public affairs position.

Training

Beginning with an indoctrination course in Pensacola, Fla., during your first Annual Training, you will apply your skills and knowledge in any number of service settings. Including aboard Naval ships, on-site at Naval hospitals or bases, or even in major shore or Fleet command situations.
