Description

Provide wide-ranging medical support for the members of the Fleet. Tend to the sick, the injured and their families. Perform clinical tests. Assist in surgeries. Care for the health needs of those who serve and care for our country.

This is your life as a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy Reserve. You will work with the latest technology and the most dedicated team of experts you could ever hope to find. All while undergoing medical training that is unrivaled in the civilian world and developing expertise in health care that’s respected in the outside world.

To qualify for a position in the Medical and Dental field, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent. If you have a bachelor’s or advanced degree, you may also be interested in a career as an Officer in Navy Health Care.

Specifics

As a Hospital Corpsman, your responsibilities may include administering medications and injections, transporting sick and injured personnel, or working in the field with Special Forces, the Seabees or the Marine Corps.

As part of this occupational specialty, you could:
  • Help prevent and treat diseases and injuries
  • Serve as an operating room technician for general and specialized surgery
  • Operate sophisticated medical diagnostic treatment equipment

  • Render emergency medical or dental treatment
  • Specialize in fields such as radiology, Search and Rescue, optical and preventive medicine

Training

Working with an air squadron, Special Forces, or in a hospital or clinic, the advanced medical training you receive in the Navy Reserve prepares you for numerous specialties. You may have the opportunity to earn Department of Labor certification, allowing you to work as a(n):
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Your training may also prepare you to be or enhance your current career as a:
  • Surgical Technician
  • Respiratory Therapist
  • Nuclear Medical Technologist
  • Physical Therapist’s Assistant
  • Pharmacist’s Assistant
  • Medical Records Clerk

Most of the on-the-job training in the Health Care field directly translates as credit at colleges and universities. Advanced technical and operational training is also available in many specialized fields.

Duties and responsibilities directly translate to careers in civilian health care fields. As long as people need medical services, individuals with skills in these areas will be in high demand.
