Work with Combat and Transport Aircraft

Overview

As a Reservist in the Aviation Technology field, you can move from your civilian job one day to working with some of the most sophisticated combat and transport aircraft in the world the next.

Description

Reservists in the Aviation Technology field oversee almost every detail of flight operations, from inspecting and maintaining aircraft electrical systems to overseeing parachute-jumps to assisting in search-and-rescue operations.

Working in this field, you will train on some of the most modern, innovative and high-tech aircraft and equipment in the world.

To qualify for a position in the Aviation Technology field, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent. If you have a bachelor’s or advanced degree, you may also be interested in a career as an Aviation Officer.

The Aviation field in the Navy Reserve has a variety of positions from which to choose, all with the same purpose: to ensure that every plane, jet or helicopter can perform its mission successfully and return home safely.

Training

You’ll receive a mix of hands-on training and classroom study that can be counted as semester hours toward an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree. You may also have the opportunity to earn certification from the Department of Labor, allowing you to work as any of the following:
  • Sheet metal worker
  • Aircraft mechanic
  • Aviation support equipment repairer
  • Electronics mechanic
  • Computer peripheral-equipment operator
  • Upholsterer

The advanced technical and operational training you will gain can also accelerate your career development. The skills within this occupational specialty are highly sought after by civilian airports, airline industries and aircraft manufacturers as well as government and law enforcement agencies.
