Making the Navy Reserve work for you.
For Nick, the Navy Reserve is the ultimate paid internship. As a student, earning his PhD in biomedical engineering, Nick is able to work with high-tech systems aboard one of the most sophisticated submarines in the world and apply that knowledge to his studies.
A science aficionado, Nick was first drawn to the Navy because of its challenging Nuclear Power Program. It’s considered one of the most rigorous, academic military training programs in the world and is known for taking smart, technical minds and transforming them into some of the world’s smartest technical minds. Nick fared well in this program since his pursuit of an advanced degree involved making monumental breakthroughs in science.
Besides the real-world, hands-on experiences, Nick joined the Reserve so he can continue to be a part of something bigger than himself. “The Navy Reserve is probably the best part-time job that I could find. I found something that is fun and makes a difference. It’s a juggling act and I’m just glad the Navy Reserve is flexible in that respect. If it wasn’t, I probably wouldn’t be able to do this,” says Nick.
Nick realizes that he comes out the winner while wearing “both hats.” He has the satisfaction of knowing that he’s serving his country while getting complementary homework help.
Currently, Nick is working on a biomimetic tactile sensor for grip control on prosthetic and robotic limbs, which is sure to revolutionize this field of science.
